Travel Brand was fortunate enough to create a compelling commercial for Makumu Private Game Lodge.

This 60 000-hectare game reserve is located in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve in Hoedspruit and has been sculpted over 19 years. The contract between the raw environment around you and the warm, inviting oasis of the lodge creates a holiday like no other.

This was certainly an exciting experience for us, and we’d like to share our behind-the-scenes with you.

We worked directly with the owners Stefan Breuer, Karin Seger, and their amazing team. It was also an awesome opportunity to work with Emma Gatland Photographer, for the first time.

On our first morning, we had to grab our gear and go bright and early. We didn’t even need to leave the lodge before we started shooting as two huge male lions walked right past the camp. We were lucky enough to set up the drone and capture this epic shot from above.

We spent a significant amount of time in the lodge’s photographic bunker, called iThumbela'. The name is loosely translated from the Shangaan language and means ‘place to hide'. This is the perfect place to sit in silence and relish the environment coming to life. Here, we captured some awesome shots of elephants and hyenas that journeyed to the watering hole.

Next was a much-needed coffee stop back at the lodge, a refuel for our next activity.
We spent some time with Stefan and Karin conducting a walking shoot. This was much more adventurous than it sounds, as one of the shots had me walking half-body deep through the Klaserie River to catch the clip of Stefan driving his V8 Landcruiser through the river.

We spent around two hours immersed in the bush. We located a herd of elephants and followed in their footsteps in an effort to capture a mesmerising shot of them crossing the sandy road with a game drive in the background.

We felt like royalty for the remainder of the day. Our evening consisted of chasing sunsets to encapsulate the magic of the golden hour in the bush. With Phillip capturing the scenes on the ground and myself flying the drone for aerial shots, we were able to gather the content we needed. We were then treated to a tantalising bush dinner and drinks within the brackets of a dry riverside, my idea of heaven on earth.

But the work didn’t stop there. We took to the rock-hewn roads after the sun dipped below the horizon. While wandering the park at night, we were extremely lucky to find a leopard sighting with three different leopards and six hyenas fighting over an Impala kill.

Overall, every adventure we embarked on during our time at Makumu led to astonishing scenery or animal sightings. It wasn’t difficult to capture the essence of the experience. The authentic nature and organic feeling of bushveld bliss is felt in every corner of the location.

The Makumu staff was amazing. Their patience and commitment is highly appreciated, never wavering even when we made them light and blow out lanterns at least 50 times, just to get the right shot.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Makumu Lodge and look forward to returning in the future.
